Women in Theatre of Kauai announces a call for entries for Kauai Shorts, its seventh ten minute play festival, produced every other year. So sharpen your pencils, cudgel your brains and burn some fresh midnight oil – and then send your mini-magnum opus to us by April 1, 2019

Plays will not be considered if they fail to honor the criteria laid out below. If anything is confusing email us at KauaiShortsFestival@gmail.com with questions prior to sending us your play. Questions will not permit late arrival of scripts.

ORIGINALITY: We seek plays that are new, inventive, fresh, and not an adaptation of work by another author. The play may have been workshopped or presented as an unstaged reading prior to entry in the Festival, but must be unpublished and not previously performed before a paying audience.

THEME: No specific themes are being requested.

GENRES: Comedy, Drama, Melodrama, Tragedy, Theatre of the Absurd, Mystery and Thrillers are welcome. No Musicals, Plays for Children or monologues will be considered or returned.

MUSIC: No copyrighted music permitted. Royalty-free music will be considered.

TECHNICAL DEMANDS: Simple set/lighting/sound, minimal furniture, costumes and props given priority.

LENGTH & CAST SIZE: Maximum of 10 minutes or 12 pages with one-inch margins, double-spaced with 12-point font. Min 2 characters and max 5 characters. Max of 4 characters is given preference.

SUBMISSIONS: WIT’s End will only consider the first 100 submissions only. Please provide two (2) copies of your script in PDF or .doc format. One copy should include a brief synopsis, your name, 125-word biography of the playwright and full contact information – including name, address, phone and email address. The Second copy should be the script only and not include your name. Copies should be emailed the same day to KauaiShortsFestival@gmail.com.
All submissions must be received by April 1, 2019. No scripts will be accepted via postal mail and no scripts will be returned. Subject line of your email should be the title of the play only.

SUBMISSION FEE: $10 payable via PayPal “Donation” LINK.
Your Payment should include your name so that, in the previous instruction, the recipient of your emailed submission can match your $10 “donation”.

More than one play may be submitted as a separate entry (along with the requisite fee for each play) but no playwright will have more than one entry selected for the Festival production.

TITLE OF PLAY & PAGE NUMBER are to be on each page of your script.

WHO MAKES PLAY CHOICES: One Director, Playwright and Theatre enthusiast determine play selections.

TEN PLAYS SELECTED with an eleventh for possible inclusion. Performed over three 4-day weekends opening Thursday 08 of August, 2019.

PLAYWRIGHT CONSENT: Submission of plays means playwrights agree to all criteria laid out by WIT’s End necessary to submit a play and gives WIT’s End permission to use their name and the name of their plays in all Playbills and promotional efforts. The playwright understands they will not be paid royalties for the staging or video-taping of their play.

TWO $100 WINNERS will each be provided with a $100 check sent within 30 days following the Festival closing. It is possible the same play will receive both $100 awards. First award determined by the three panelists as BEST WRITTEN PLAY and 2nd winner to be determined by ballots provided to our audience for the BEST STAGED PLAY. Audience will not be informed of the BEST WRITTEN PLAY prior to voting.

CRITICAL FEEDBACK. No feedback will be provided to playwrights whether play was accepted or not. All playwrights who submitted a play for consideration will be informed of the winning playwright’s name, name of their play and their city of residence. No other contact information will be provided.

VIDEOTAPING. If done a copy will be provided to Festival playwrights at no cost to them.

COPY OF PLAYBILL FOR PLAYWRIGHT will be included with shipment of the video-tape.

PLAY SUBMISSIONS BECOME PROPERTY OF WIT’s End AND WILL NOT BE RETURNED but the play itself remains the sole property of the playwright.

As a friendly reminder since all at WIT’s End want all to succeed please keep in mind if playwrights fail to honor the above criteria playwrights will not be informed and plays will not be read, considered or returned.

WIT’s End appreciates your interest and possible participation. Our panelists are eager to read your scripts and the possibility of including you in the first Festival in WIT’s End’s new home… Break a leg!
